About Us

Chesapeake Minerals is part of The Stewart Companies, a mid-Atlantic-based group of diversified businesses employing over 1,600 people across various markets. The Stewart Companies operate active mining sites in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Colorado, producing over 3.2 million tons of sand, gravel, and stone annually.

Our Process

Chesapeake Minerals sources select grades of quartz gravel from York Building Products’ adjacent Belvedere plant, where over 10,000 tons of alluvial sand and gravel are processed daily.

Select quartz gravel is crushed, washed, and classified into various low-iron quartz commodities. Glass sand (40 x 140 US Mesh) is dried and further purified by removing iron-bearing magnetic minerals to produce ultra-low iron glass sand, known as Principio White. After magnetic separation, our glass sand reaches 99.998% SiO2 purity.

In 2024, two new grinding mills—one wet and one dry—were added to produce high-purity silica powders tailored to customer specifications.

Centrally located in the mid-Atlantic region, our plant is conveniently located along I-95 — halfway between Baltimore and Philadelphia — with direct access to both the interstate and the CSX railroad.
